IBDP CAS

What does CAS stand for?

  • Creativity: exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance.
  • Activity: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Service: collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need.

What should I expect?

  • It involves personal challenge.
  • It happens regularly, weekly, and over 18 months.
  • You will keep a CAS portfolio on ManageBac.
  • There are seven CAS learning outcomes.
  • You will engage in CAS experiences.
  • A CAS project must show initiative, demonstrate perseverance, and develop skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • There are multiple CAS stages.
  • You will be involved with CAS interviews.
  • You will develop your reflective skills (workshop to follow).

CAS should involve:

  • Real, purposeful activities, which meet one or more of the 7 learning outcomes;
  • Personal challenge (tasks must extend the student and be achievable in scope);
  • Students using the CAS stages (investigation, preparation, action, re flection, and demonstration) to guide CAS experiences and projects;
  • Thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, and reporting (done on ManageBac); and
  • Evidence and reflection on outcomes and personal learning.

Why Is CAS necessary?

  • CAS provides an important counterbalance to the academic pressures of the rest of the Diploma Programme.
  • It assists students with being more willing to accept new challenges and new roles.
  • CAS enables the student to be a more reflective thinker.
  • Students become more aware of themselves as members of communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment.
  • Students become active participants in sustained, collaborative projects.
  • Students are more than just a GPA!
