Grade 10 - Service

Objectives

  • IG students will be able to develop awareness of needs in VIS and Malta’s community; and address those needs through service and experiential learning.
  • IG students will be able to participate in sustained and in-depth inquiry, leading to service as action in the community
  • Grade 10 IG students will be able to engage in elements of the IB’s CAS Program, as a form of orientation to the next stage of Service Learning.

Learning Goals

As a result of meaningful and purposeful participation in the TIP Project, learners will develop an understanding of and practise for CAS DP programme in Grade 11 .

Each learner should fulfill each of the following outcomes  (from the CAS guide) at least once during the year, through either their long or short-term impact experience. Evidence of this will be demonstrated in a final interview, during which students will also complete their pre-CAS student profile form.

Each TIP student will:

  • identify his or her own strengths and develop areas for growth.
  • demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
  • demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
  • show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
  • demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
  • demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
  • recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

Reflections

In order to assess student engagement and level of achievement in all assigned learning goals, all Grade 10 students are expected to consistently reflect on their experiences in their Managebac TIP journals and make use of their TIP Handbook.

Experiences

  • Long-term impact experience

Students will choose at least one of the current service learning opportunities being offered at Verdala through the CAS programme. The will be required to reflect on their involvement at least once a month on Managebac.

  • Short-term impact experience
    Students will choose to be involved in at least one of three short-term impact experiences within the whole-school context.
    • Thankfulness Week (November)
    • Winter Warmth Week  (February)
    • Hospice Sunflower Project (April)
  • TIP Week of Impact

After the completion of the completion of the IG examinations, students will have the opportunity to be involved in a weeklong programme of impact.
