Service
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
CAS, which stands for Creativity, Activity, Service, is a fundamental part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP). It is one of the three essential elements in the IB Diploma’s core, alongside the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). The CAS requirement is designed to strengthen and extend students’ personal and interpersonal learning from the ages of 16 to 19.
Creativity: involves students engaging in arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Activity: requires students to participate in physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, fostering a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment.
Service: entails students undertaking projects related to community service, offering them a chance to apply classroom learning to real-world challenges and meet societal needs.
The primary goal of CAS is to enhance students' personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and enable them to engage in activities that promote their growth as individuals. It encourages them to take initiative, demonstrate perseverance, and develop skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and decision making.
Through CAS, IB Diploma students must demonstrate ongoing and regular involvement in the activities over a minimum period of 18 months. They are required to show that they have achieved a balance among creativity, activity, and service components, leading to meaningful personal outcomes and development. The process of reflection on their CAS experiences is as important as the experiences themselves, helping students to consolidate their learning and development.
