English Language Support

Elementary School

As an International School, our classroom educators are experienced teaching students for whom English is an additional  language. Students accepted to Verdala that are identified as needing additional support in G3-5 (A2) beyond the classroom setting, will be part of special sessions with our Language Specialist.  These lessons are designed to develop our students' English language proficiency (A2) to further support academic success.  Once students have achieved sufficient English proficiency, they will exit our special support and join Spanish language study.

Middle School

As an International School, our classroom educators are experienced teaching students for whom English is an additional language, but a minimum English proficiency (A2) is required to successfully access the English-language instruction.  All applying  students are assessed for their English proficiency, so that they can be properly placed into English classes.  Students take either English Acquisition or English Language and Literature class.  Students identified as needing additional support will receive additional classes from our Language Specialist. Students in the English Language Support program are tested annually to ensure the correct placement for the following school year.

High School

As an International School, our classroom educators are experienced teaching students for whom English is an additional language, but a minimum English proficiency is required to successfully access the English-language instruction.  All applying students are assessed for their English proficiency, so that they can be properly placed into English classes.

• Grades 9 & 10: 
  Students take either English Acquisition or English Language and Literature class.  Since the IGCSE is a two year program, students remain in their assigned English path for both years. All students take the appropriate IGCSE exam at the end of their 10th grade year, based on their English course preparation.
  
  
• Grades 11 & 12:
  At the end of their 10th grade year, students are counseled regarding their IB DP language choices, based on their repertoire of languages, their language proficiency scores, their English class marks, their IGCSE scores and their future educational and professional goals.  Students choose from a combination of Language A (Language A (English: Language and Literature or Mother Tongue:  Self-Taught Literature), Language B (English, French, Italian or Spanish) and Ab Initio (French, Italian or Spanish).
